Freedom in Choosing Majors

No more creative writings. It's time for academic writing. So... This is the final draft of the second essay I had to write in school. It's an argumentative essay, I guess.

Title: Freedom in Choosing Majors

Conflicts between parents and high school graduate daughters usually revolve around the issue of which college the daughters should enroll at which majors the daughters should undertake. Unlike in Western, Asian or African countries, parents in Gulf countries assumes that it's more significant to make decisions based on moral codes and beliefs of their religion and traditions. However, parents' point of view clashes with that of their daughters. Daughters were raised in a much more developed world whereby traditions and religion are not as much contemplated and globalization made them more exposed to unorthodox way of thinking. Daughters should be entitled to freely undertake their desired major as parents' choice is not perfect due to their incomplete knowledge of their daughters' preferences and cause the daughters to undergo stressful days, even if parents have made decisions based on their experience and other factors.

Firstly, daughters' preferences, likes and hobbies are not completely known by parents. No matter how open daughters are, there are always several interests and dislikes that they hid from their parents. Without knowing these critical information, parents will not be able to peacefully present their choice of which major the daughters should undertake.

Secondly, with the authority that parents have, the daughters will more likely succumb to their parents' decisions. When that happens, the daughters will undertake the majors that their parents have decided for them and the results of such action will definitely not satisfy both parties. The daughters will have to undergo stressful days of studying what they don't deem as favorable and that will negatively affect their behaviors and attitudes towards studies and social life. Negative attitude towards studies will negatively affect the daughters' grades and bad grades will affect their future in an unfavorable way. Moreover, negative behaviors and attitude will have a negative impact in the daughters' social lives. The pessimism and negative demeanor will drive away potential friends that the daughters could have had befriended.

On the contrary, parents have experienced similar situations and through the wisdom that they have acquired from their past experiences, parents are able to make a reasonably good decision for the daughters to follow. Before finalizing their decisions, parents would considers various factors, such as the family income, the location and of the campus of the chosen major and the future job opportunities that will be made available to the daughters upon graduating with the major that the parents chose. Not to forget that parents in Gulf countries are concerned whether the campus is a female students only zone or not, with male teachers and staff as exceptions. However, despite all the counter-arguments, daughters should have the right to freely choose which major that they want to undertake.

In conclusion, despite parents' ability to come up with reasonable decisions, daughters should be granted the right to freely choose the major that they wish to undertake as parents' choice is not one hundred percent perfect because parents does not completely know the daughters' interests or dislikes and forcing decisions on the daughters will only cause the daughters to go through stressful days. Whichever majors the daughters chose, they will definitely hold onto their decisions and firmly break through all of the hardships that they will encounter in the future.
